Presently the prison ministry team comprises eight people, hopefully soon to become nine.
Everyone of the team is vetted and security checked by the prison authorities before they can become a team member. The prison is modern and has a bright fairly large chapel which accommodates about 80 people comfortably. When we are there it is often well attended. One of us will prepare the service. One of the team will give a gospel message. Others will also contribute, and we try to get the inmates involved if possible, e.g with a bible reading.
In the past there was a choir which used to take part in the service, but it was disbanded. Gifted leaders are not always available. We are hoping that the choir may be reformed so that we can hear them again. We are blessed that one of the inmates can play the piano to accompany the hymns. One of the things that you notice in Littlehey is the amount of talent there, musically, artistically and literary. The men truly come from all walks of life.
Of as much importance as the service is the time we spend with the men afterwards. They often speak of their appreciation of the service and we often feel that the Spirit has been moving. We are looked after well and talk over coffee and biscuits. Naturally many of the men are burdened about various issues which they sometimes wish to share, so a good listening ear is essential.
We are blessed that the chaplain gives us complete freedom in the service. We are also excited at the moment because a new youth offenders establishment is due to open in the grounds early next year. We have been asked to provide services there as well. This may mean going twice as often or establishing another team.
